Job Description:

Role Purpose: Under the supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Medical Director and Respiratory Therapy Department Director, the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is responsible for providing Respiratory care services in accordance with specific physician's orders, department policies and procedures, and guidelines.

• Efficiently performs bedside spirometry testing according to ATS guidelines; bronchial hygiene modalities such as CPT, flutter, and vest therapy; non-invasive ventilation with BiPAP and the Vision systems and documents results accurately in patient charts.
• Documents all pertinent data on the patient's medical record following completion of any service. Maintains a thorough knowledge of all department forms, log books and their proper usage.
• Follows department equipment disinfection and sterilization procedures accurately at all times.
• Serves as an expert resource in the department for interdepartmental co-workers, external co-workers such as nursing services and medical staff. Assists with competency training of new employees, students and annual competency testing of department.
• Provides education to patients and their families regarding all services rendered by the department to the patient as needed. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages, including pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
• Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skill for obtaining ABG's and using I-STAT analyzer.
• Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery. Assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery. Analyzes oxygen saturation results with appropriate knowledge.
• Performs pulse oximetry for single checks, multiple checks with exercise, continuous and overnight studies and documentation.
• Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purposed of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
• Set-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such a modality of therapy, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning.
• Demonstrates knowledge of bedside bronchoscopy cart set-up and assisting physician, as well as obtaining specimens and transport to laboratory properly.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
• Graduate of an AMA approved school of Respiratory Therapy
• NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist
• IL RCP licensure
• Completion of school clinical rotations including critical care
• Must have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the Respiratory Therapy Department and participates in the training and development of other RCP's and student workers. Assists with competency testing.

Physical Requirements: Employees in this position are, or can be, required to possess the following physical capabilities:
• Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling objects
• Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily
• Standing or walking more than 2 hours a day
• Running to respond to patient emergencies
• Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 1 hours a day
• Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
• Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
• Audio acuity to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment that would indicate dangerous or improper operation
